Our ancestors had no concept of genetics, but they were still able to influence the DNA of other organisms by a process called selective breeding or artificial selection. Seated use of this practice over many generations can result in dramatic genetic changes to a species. So while artificial selection is now what we typically consider GMO technology today, it's still the precursor to the modern processes.
