Protagoras: The First Sophist

Plato credits Protagoras with having invented the profession of Sophism. He was born in Abedara, which sat on the Thracian shoreline opposite the island of Thassos. The dates of his lifetime are not recorded though, but are extrapolated from Plato's dialogue. According to Philodemus, he did not believe that mathematics was worth studying at all.
