Porfirio Diaz had taken over a political, unstable country and held it together for 35 years. He invited the foreign capitalists to invest in Mexico in order to rapidly modernize their infrastructure. But after 20 years of high-flying progress and growth, things turned stagnant. The middle classes suffered from a lack of trade and business.
