The Importance of String Theory
String theory does one vital thing, which no other theory has yet been able to do. One of the big goals of physics is to unify the forces of nature. String theory replaces a point particle with a small little string. You're made up of small little strings vibrating away. It means that quantum mechanics and, and relativity can be combined because the string actually has gravity in it. But then indeed, it now needs to start making some predictions about things that can be observed.
