The Greatest of the Poets

Homer is the greatest of the poets, and a poem can only ever do it indirectly. A philosopher or theologian philosophy broadly construed cannot deliver such an education in poetry. The humanist response would be that not only does a spoonful of sugar help the medicine go down, like it's more entertaining and pleasurable to read Homer than a treatise on logic.
