We wanted people to identify with these little characters first and foremost so they felt like there were stakes to the decisions that were being made at all. So we're like oh this guy is angry and so all of his dialogue is angry sounding and he's got angry eyebrows but it just wouldn't matter because nobody would feel anything. And then you rewrite it almost like Hemingway style to be like Harold is an orphan or a lonely boy who had a complicated life growing up and suddenly you have like these facts upon which to start filling in your own blanks kind of um.
