After the first two variations, all o this is interrupted wi the thoughtful and passionate moment of reflection. And we're left leaning back in our seat, thinking about that summary folk song, but also wondering what all those interruptions were about. Finally, sabelius tells usthis is a shocking moment. The harmony is dissonant, scary and ominous. It's as if fate had intruded on this happy summer gathering, and it doesn't go away. But the illusion is clear, the once upon a time theme will not be ignored, but instead, it has transformed itself into something far more threatening.
