By the 9th century we know that Vikings or Norsemen were setting out from this region to plunder and pillages. And within Norway what we've got at this time is a gradual consolidation of power into the hands of a small number of increasingly dominant petty kings as it were. Some of the most extraordinary archaeological sources from the Viking Age also come from 9th century Norway. There's three of them, three for the price of one in the Viking Ship Museum on the island of Bugdoy in Oslo. Although at the time we're recording this, I think it's closed and they're sort of jassing it up and extending it. And it's going to reopen as the Museum of
