The Field Theory of Electromagnetism

In 1845 Michael Faraday discovered that light, electricity and magnetism could be linked through something called the magneto-optical effect. Ten years later Bunsen Kirchhoff showed how you can do that too. This allowed him to get rid of the notion of chemical atoms - he didn't like matter as an analytical category. The field theory of electromagnetism remains one of the cornerstones of modern theoretical physics.
