The tactics and norms that emerged from these subcultures began to really shape the language and norms of internet culture more broadly. Nagel: People on 4chan started doxing them, swatting their houses, and sending them death threats. He says they also had things like getting people fired for a joke that was a bit off-color.
The early days of the internet collide with the feverish fandom of “Harry Potter,” and a sprawling, global community emerges. But the hopefulness of this new technology brings with it the darker impulses of human nature.
