It's interesting that the free determinist or fatalists interpretation of the theory of grace seems very difficult philosophically speaking. So it seems kind of strange intuitively that that would have become the default, most popular view. But virtually all Western Christian theology is based on a guston of hippo. It's all looking back to what Augustine had struggled towards in the fourth and fifth centuries. And when the Reformation came along, both sides Catholic and Protestants were really arguing in Augustine's terms.
