The Story of the Mario Detainees
In 1987, Mario Cubans took over the federal penitentiary in Atlanta for 11 days. Many of the men inside the prison had lived free in the U.S. for years and started lives here. But because of a conviction or even a suspicion of criminal activity, they'd found themselves locked up in immigration detention. The ACLU's efforts to obtain the list and thus to advocate on their behalf only made the list more hidden.
