The origin of s l c may pre date domestication. Many traits considered typical of cultivated tomatoes arose in south american s l c, but were lost or diminished once these partially domesticated forms spread northward. These traits were then likely re selected in a convergent fashion in the common cul vated tomato prior to its expansion around the world.
