For me, it's a mix of both and alternating between them is the best way for me. So you learn the high level and then try to learn through doing. And when you have some questions, you can always come back to the kind of finer range of details. There's people who are like prefer only the theoretical understanding and only look at the papers. People who look at the code or just look at the like tinkering of things is the way that they learn about them.
