"I didn't consult books or pamphlets. I just put a plane sheet of paper in front of me," he says. "What do you say when you're called upon to speak for all thirteen colonies, to speak for human freedom? And so without consulting anything, I wrote out my first draft and handed it into the Continental Congress on July 2, 1776" He adds: "It was one of the most difficult moments of my entire life."
