The zohar is this in so called book of enlightenment that kind of lays the groundwork for cobalistic mystical interpretations of the tora. It's clear that it was penned by a rabbi in spain named moses de laon, but he sort of back dated it and wrote it in an old fashioned aramaic style to make it seem even more ancient. People really embrace kabala as a way of understanding what jews were going through.
