The History of Athens

Greece consumed large quantities of grain brought from beyond the seas. The Pyreus became the foremost commercial port in the eastern Mediterranean. Athens also had to import virtually all of its shipbuilding supplies, including timber and sailcloth. Greece's economy was driven largely by the need for grain to feed a large population.
