The goal is not to create any kind of feeling or any particular rhythm for the breath. The breath happens all by itself. Notice as it comes in, notice as it goes out. If your mind wanders away from breath, if something distracts you, that's ok. Don't worry about whether other meditators would do this differently. When you're ready, you can open your eyes or open your awareness and return to the everyday world.
