Before mercantileism and then capitalism as we understand it to day, people found natural rhythms of time unproblematic. It's in the seventeenth century, with the rise of a newtonian mechanics and the geocentric view of the world, that we enact this transition. Yet it's almost as if calendar time is no longer a problem for us. So we're out of joint with natural rhythms, but completely in line with calendar time. And it sounds lie what you're describing, david, as maybe that it was the verse in previous periods. Yes, i think that's right.
