Is the Machima on a Pathway?
It is true to say that his ritual suicide caused a consternation in Japan. Ten thousand ordinary Japanese, not associated with right-wing groups or associated with nationalist corkuses attended machinist funeral. It basically caused an enormous civic and psychological shock in Japan. Was the machima on a trajectory of his own? Did he represent the soul of his people as he believed? was his act alonely and masochistic one totally contrary to the post-modern and westernised wiles of contemporary Japan? Or was it in a sense a return, as he would have configured it, to fundamental verities about what it was to be Japanese as against any other nationality on earth? Nobody
