People would make a pilgrimage to sanabel island and collect as many shells as they could. And i remember some of this from my childhood too. Like there were boiling pots. If you stayed in a florida beech front hotel, there would be little boiling station where everybody brought the live animals to just boil them and retrieve the shells. That has really changed. You know, people who would have thought nothing of taking a whole trunkfull of live animal, say, in the 19 fifties or the sixties, would never do that to day.
