Anil Seth is one of the most interesting people I've ever spoke to on this topic. He runs a research lab at the University of Sussex devoted to it. Two years ago, he gave a fantastic TED Talk on the topic which seemed more than 8 million times. Next year, he's coming out with a major book on the topic called Being You,. The Real Science of Consciousness.
