CHAPTER

The New Colosseus by Emma Lazarus

The new colossus was actually written for charity. Lazarus wrote it so it could be auctioned off to raise money for the pedestal for the statue of liberty. Emma lazarus had been asked to participate by william maxwell evarts and constance carey harrison. The poem was read at the auction in december 18 83, but not at the dedication of the statue of Liberty in 18 86.
