The Story of the Invention of Photography
Thomas wedgewood was the son of the great potter josiah wedgewood. He worked extremely hard to see if it was possible to use the strange optically sensitive behavior of ver salts by soaking leather, initially with those salts, and then exposing them to light. The clever trick was to put on the leather, or some other surface, an object, so this would be what we would call a contact image.
