The nationalization of politics is a very abstract virtual politics in which people really are reduced to passive citizens or just spectators of the reality show. That's not democracy and that's not sustainable, I don't think. The news business has always needed to be as entertaining and as interesting as it can be while still serving some other function because of its role is purely entertainment. And so having that balance with the press as with education, as with the law, as with health care, as with religion was lost when cable news began running Trump's speeches wall-to-wall.
