The magnetic field rearranges the particles on tape to create a version of the wav form reconverted to an audio signal at the play back head. It was used by 50 zicons like atkins, karl perkins and elvis presley's gitaris scotty moore. The effect is easy to achieve within most digital work stations, like ableton or pro tools. Repairing tape echo units or rplacing the tape inside, is a bit of a burden but you'll still find these around.
