There can often be a disconnect between someone's personal experience and the way they think of the economy as a whole. Many people right now who are hurting under inflation feel the disproportionate effects of high rent, egg prices going up. So even though there is quote unquote good news that widespread layoffs haven't taken over the economy, consumers are still spending.
