So to Speak: The Free Speech Podcast

CHAPTER

The Rise and Fall of Angelina Grimke

Angelina Grimke was one of the most successful abolitionists of her time. She spoke at 88 meetings in 67 towns reaching an estimated 40,000 people and persuading 20,000 women to sign anti-slavery petitions. Grimke became the first woman in America to address a legislative body when she spoke against slavery in the Massachusetts State House in 1838. The day after Angelina's speech, a mob numbering 10,000 people burnt down the newly built Pennsylvania Hall. This was the world that Frederick Douglass escaped to only four months later on September 3rd, 1838.
