The Importance of Eye Gaze
i like to use this when i teach language and gesture. I kind of see how long the students can cope with me having my hands up without saying something, before i start looking a bit uncomfortable. You can stretch it out really far. So if you go up and make a gesture and you don't put it down, even if you don't say anything. And then the talker can use that return of the eye gaze to the listener to signal that they are finished with their turn. Listeners can also do things to support the person who is talking.
