Socrates' Question and Answer Method

Socrates's questions focus not only on the immediate answers of the people he's talking to, but on what kinds of commitments they are about the nature of knowledge. So why the question and answer method? He presses very hard on whether people are consistent. That seems to me to be a fundamental starting point in how we should go about doing talking about philosophy, not just religion.
