The Prohibition of Alcohol

In the 1920s, approximately 11 million prescriptions for alcohol were filled every year. Many physicians and pharmacies cashed in on this clear money-making opportunity. Hundreds of new drug stores had opened over 700 in New York City alone by 1922. In 1931, around 400 pharmacists and 1,000 doctors were caught selling signed prescription forms to bootleggers.
