The Great Vowel Shift and Regional Pronunciation Variations

This chapter discusses the regional variations in the pronunciation of vowels in English as a result of the Great Vowel Shift. It explores how the vowel changes primarily occurred in southern Britain and were then extended to the American colonies, but not all regions underwent the same shifts. The chapter also includes voice samples from individuals in the north of England and Scotland to demonstrate the original or older vowel sounds still found in these regions.
