The Dog's Death
There's no proof of any of it. Haggard stuck to his contention that the dog had communicated him. He could have made up the whole thing for all we know. The experience produced a great effect upon me, and at first frightened and upset me somewhat. But now, alas, i only bring them down in imagination with an umbrella or a walking stick. And although i should not hesitate to shoot again for food or for protection, i am by no means certain that the act would not make me feel unwell.
In 1904, adventure novelist H. Rider Haggard awoke from a dream with the conviction that his daughter's dog was dying. He dismissed the impression as a nightmare, but the events that followed seemed to give it a grim significance. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll describe Haggard's strange experience, which briefly made headlines around the world.
