When pessimism reigns, the potential for demagoguery is incredibly high. Because people want a savior. A typical savior can be Nelson Mandela. Martin Luther King. They're atypical because they are actually almost messiah-like figures. Much more likely is the small man, the small big man, the Putin of this world. And they feed on insecurities. They create a warped sense of history. This is why it's very, very dangerous. It also tends to come at times of great technological change, which people tend to find exciting.
