Professor Claire Shores has written a new book, Colonizing Disability. In the 19th century disability became an issue relevant not only to disabled people and those who imagined themselves to care for them, but to everyone. She argues that heredity pulled together concerns about body and physical difference. The South African War was one of the first times that ordinary fitness and the wound problem of the unfit also became issues of national security.
