The 1793 yellow fever epidemic in Philadelphia is not a widely known event. Dr. Thomas Appel first came upon it as an undergraduate while doing his honors thesis at the end of his degree. It was an El Nino year in 1793 and so there was an unusual amount of rainfall which meant that you had lots of containers containing water where mosquitoes could breed.
