The Rotator Cuff Irritation Model
Charles Neer talked in 1972 about a condition he presented to the orthopedic and I guess physical therapy communities. He said 95% of rotator cuff pathologies are caused by irritation from the acromion onto the rotator cuff. So we very much consider the source of the pathology being acromial irritation. But there may be two other mechanisms of so-called impingement that don't place the acromION as the primary source, the primary culprit. We know that this is a mechanism of potential swelling in the Achilles based on studies from 2004.
