We are doing things as a species right now which are making the chances of a truly devastating pandemic much more probable. The way we conduct contemporary, intensive live stock farming involves breeding very large amounts of animals in close proximity while dosing them heavily with antibiotics. We've had a viral pandemic just now. But the real nightmare is that we get a bacterial pathagon from,. say, pigs or chickens, most likely, which makes the jump to human beings. That would be a real catastrophe on the kind of black death scale, or worse even.
