Dickens regretted not including supernatural elements into A Tale of Two Cities. Christmas ghost stories are probably a very old tradition. An interest rose in response to industrialization, the rise of science and new technologies. Some scholars have even suggested that leaking gas lamps as part of the Victorian city meant people were hallucinating more due to carbon monoxide poisoning.
