I think what Roger Penrose does in turning to the Potomac tradition too is precisely the right way round of considering spiritual reality as illuminating physical manifestations of reality. It reaches back to an older perception that the subjective is actually more real than the objective. Dante certainly would have still agreed with that although there was debate about it in Dante's time.
