The answer is the first of them, right? It's definitely undetermined until you look inside the box, in a way. And so the answer is that it's not determined by some little piece of information the electron carries with it. One other alternative is that it is deterministic, but there's some like global universe spanning function called the pilot wave which is organizing everything across space and time.
