The Effects of Stress on the Brain

Cortisol is a stress hormone that we need. It keeps your blood sugar up and your blood pressure up under adverse circumstances. If you don't have cortisol, you die. But our bodies are designed to have short bursts of cortisol not long drawn out cortisol forever. Chronic stress causes brain cells to die as well because those brain cells ultimately need more energy in order to be able to respond to cortisol.
