The word positivism is itself pretty old, and has existed at least since the nineteenth century. It's meant to be a kind of approach to how we should pursue questions in philosophy. And basically it's saying we should pursue them in the same way that we pursue questions in the sciences. You come up with theories, you test them through experiments.
