The word positivism is itself pretty old, and has existed at least since the nineteenth century. It's meant to be a kind of approach to how we should pursue questions in philosophy. And basically it's saying we should pursue them in the same way that we pursue questions in the sciences. You come up with theories, you test them through experiments. That's the kind of method we want in philosophy, in the same Way as in anything else. All these new things, the modern physics of the 19 twenties and thirties, make one exception to the general rule about what can be made accessible to the general public.
