Two months after we launched, his girlfriend had a pretty serious accident falling out of a five-story window. A month later, my mother was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. And so you go from feeling invulnerable at 21 or 22 to start just months into starting a business.

With $12,000 and a mascot named Snoo, two former college roommates designed a web site they hoped would become "the front page of the Internet."
