In the case of habits and addictions, the suggested rationale for resistance was simply that the addiction is easy and pleasurable. Well, tackle the hopelessness first and thank you, Avi, for your thoughtful questions. One of the techniques I use in treating people with depression and anxiety is called positive reframing. This is part of the paradoxical agenda setting to help them see that what we think of as resistance to change or their symptoms are actually reflections of what is most beautiful and awesome about the patient.
