The younger of the two sons asked his father to divide his wealth between them. Not many days later, the younger son gathered everything together and went on a journey into a distant country. And there he squandered his estate with loose living. He scattered it with wasteful. In one older English translation was prodigly. That's where that term comes from. The adverb means in a hopeless or lost state. So here, the father becomes a real developed character and so does the thing that is lost.
