In Our Time

CHAPTER

Hopkins's 'Spent Rhythm'

Joan Wright: Hopkins is very concerned with the techniques of poetry and extending them. Can you just talk about, for example, sprung rhythm, which is one of the things he uses? Joan Wright: He says that my Liverpool and Glasgow experience laid upon my mind a conviction, a truly crushing conviction, of the misery of town life to the poor. In this period where he's going between these different postings, he doesn't write very much poetry. Those poems he does write are interesting in that they may be off for a different side to Hopkins's response.
