Social psychology suggests that the best way to engage with each other is to emphasize a common identity. In politics, we continue to treat politics purely as us against them. But in everyday life, it doesn't have to be a zero sum game. One of my students was born and raised in mississippi; she's an african american hippop artist. She wanted that confederate era symbolism wiped because it was a reminder of the terror that her own family has experienced. Her grandfather actually, was murdered by the k k k. A young lady launched an incendiary protest against the mississippi state flag on a stage at a concert in new york city. The photo went viral
