The Battle of the Champions

Most of the Peloponnese had been made subject to Sparta by 546 BC. The Spartans fought Argives in what is known as the Battle of the Champions. This was a decisive victory for Sparta, who not only took away the fertile Thyredus plain, but also a larger piece of land and annexed it to Laconia. Their success against Arcadian Argos brought the Spartans directly into contact with the Ismaest states. It may have been this victory that encouraged the independent city-states of Epidorus, Trozing and Hermione, all in the Argalid, to make military alliances with Sparta.
