The Importance of Having a Mountain Division
The U.S. had no war manual on how to fight a war in the mountains. H. Adams Carter identified, procured and translated manuals from German, Austrian, Swiss, and French mountain troops. Bob Bates went to the quartermaster corps which is responsible for everything you need to fight awar. And like a lot of the climbers from Sierra Club, like Bester Robinson, Raffi Badain, and Dick Leonard, they were part of this as well.
